If you’re looking for a compact SUV that stands out from the legions of dull, uninspiring crossovers you see on the road every day, there may be a Mazda CX-5 in your future. Take a look at the 2021 Mazda CX-5 at a dealer like the Goodyear Mazda dealership, and you’ll be pleasantly surprised by the striking exterior styling and pleasing paint colors. But the CX-5 can’t get by on looks alone. Get behind the wheel, and you’ll learn what really sets the CX-5 apart from the competition. The first thing you’ll notice is that it’s fun to drive. The agile handling is assisted by a fast-shifting six-speed automatic gearbox, rather than the disappointing CVTs you’ll find in many rival models. These are a few reasons the 2021 Mazda CX-5 was named one of Car and Driver’s 10Best models of the year.
According to the Mazda dealer in Goodyear, significant changes for 2021 include the addition of a new Carbon Edition trim level, which features exclusive Polymetal Gray exterior paint and red upholstery. The top-line Signature model gets a few new standard features, including a higher-definition 360-degree camera, driver attention alert and rear automated emergency braking. The updated infotainment system now has a 10.3-inch touchscreen, a new Mazda Connect interface, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Mazda Connected services, a Wi-Fi hotspot and a remote app.
The automotive press gives the 2021 Mazda CX-5 excellent reviews. Car and Driver writes: “Mazda has shown us that its attention to detail is more than skin-deep, with thoughtful ergonomics and engaging driving dynamics. … Despite a smaller cargo area than its key competitors, the 2021 CX-5 shines brighter than all its classmates and even some more-expensive alternatives.”
The 2021 Mazda CX-5 is available in six trim levels: Sport, Touring, Carbon Edition, Grand Touring, Grand Touring Reserve and Signature. Powering the Sport, Touring, Carbon Edition and Grand Touring trims is a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine that puts out 187 horses and 186 lb-ft, connected to a six-speed automatic transmission. The Grand Touring Reserve and Signature models are equipped with a 2.5-liter turbo-four that generates 250 hp and 320 lb-ft with premium gas. Fueled with regular, those figures are 227 hp and 310 lb-ft. This engine is coupled with the six-speed automatic gearbox and is optional in the Carbon Edition trim. Both engines get a choice between front- and all-wheel drive.
The CX-5 is very fuel-efficient. The base four-cylinder engine with front-wheel drive gets fuel economy estimated by the EPA at 35 mpg city/31 mpg highway, while all-wheel-drive models return 24 mpg city/30 mpg highway.* The turbocharged engine checks in with 22 mpg city/27 mpg highway.
The base Mazda CX-5 Sport trims come with 17-inch alloy wheels, dual exhaust outlets, LED headlights with automatic high beams, gray cloth-covered seats, push-button start, an electric parking brake, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, and rain-sensing windshield wipers. Also standard is a 10.3-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a 10.25-inch center display and two USB ports.
All-wheel-drive models feature Off-Road Traction Assist, which can apply the brakes to individual wheels to supply extra grip when driving in slippery off-road situations.
